The fortress was raised on Lekursi Hill in 1537 by order of Ottoman Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent, during his campaign against the island of Corfu. It guarded the harbour of Sarandë, controlled the coastal road and protected the inland route to Butrint. Contemporary records mention an initial garrison of about 220 soldiers.
For roughly two centuries the castle functioned as a modest watchtower-fortress rather than a major citadel. Its square plan with two massive round towers at opposite corners follows classic 16th-century military design, while the walls — up to 7 metres high and 2 metres thick — were built from local limestone.
After the Russo-Turkish War and the redrawing of borders in the late 19th century, the castle's strategic value disappeared. It was gradually abandoned after 1878, left to crumble and be reclaimed by vegetation on the hilltop.
In the 20th century, consolidation and partial restoration works preserved the surviving walls. The site was recognised as a protected cultural monument and became a quiet lookout point appreciated by local residents and travellers alike.
Today Lëkurësi Castle is among the most visited viewpoints of southern Albania. A seasonal restaurant operates inside the walls, and every evening the terrace fills with visitors watching the sun sink over the Ionian Sea and the island of Corfu.

The on-site Restorant Kalaja e Lëkurësit is an open-air restaurant inside the castle walls serving traditional Albanian food — grilled meat, local cheese and seafood — with a terrace that overlooks the entire bay. Lëkurësi Castle was built as a forward defensive post during Suleiman the Magnificent's 1537 campaign against Corfu. Others trace it to a local family name or to an older Greek word for the district. None of these explanations is confirmed — they remain folk etymologies.
According to a popular tale, Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent himself climbed Lekursi Hill to select the site, and from the unfinished tower he watched the fires of his fleet preparing to strike Corfu. It is a vivid story often retold to visitors, though no contemporary source records such a visit.
An old folk tale holds that on moonlit nights the silhouettes of the long-gone Ottoman guards can still be seen pacing the walls. Older residents of Sarandë enjoy retelling the story, yet no one has ever produced a first-hand witness.
Another oft-told tale speaks of a hoard buried by the garrison before the fortress was abandoned in 1878. Generations of treasure hunters have dug among the olive groves — finding nothing but stones and roots, and leaving the legend to grow.
